Margin Targets for Quote: Real-Time Profit Visibility Inside Anvil Pro

min read

If you manage a sales team at an equipment dealership, you already know the challenge that comes with different equipment carrying different profit expectations, and making sure your reps know (and hit) those targets is an ongoing effort.

A $200,000 high-horsepower tractor carries a very different margin expectation than a $15,000 compact unit or a $1,000 attachment. But for most dealerships, those expectations live in a spreadsheet, a conversation, or a manager's memory, not where the deal is actually being worked.

Margin Targets for Anvil Pro Quote changes that, giving sales reps direct access to established sales margins on given pieces of equipment.

What does Margin Targets do?

Sales managers input profit margin expectations into Anvil Pro, adjusting by equipment category, make, series, new/used, or any combination of stock unit data. Once configured, those targets display automatically inside the quote every time a rep builds a deal.

A color-coded indicator gives the rep an instant read:

  • Green: Deal meets or exceeds margin target
  • Yellow: Positive margin, but below target
  • Red: Margin has gone negative

The indicator updates in real time as costs and pricing change. Add a program, adjust PDI, change the selling price, and the margin recalculates immediately. For the sales rep, there's nothing extra to click and no separate tool to reference. The target is just there.

For the sales manager, a separate “list view” shows margin performance across every quoted piece of equipment (actual margin, target, and the difference between these) without having to open a single individual quote.

"This is just a visual and it's a communication tool to tell you, hey, your manager has set a clear expectation for profit here." -Jeff Gutierrez, Tractor Zoom Product Manager
Margin targets display automatically in the Customer Pricing section, updating in real time as the rep works the deal.

Why we built this feature

Margin Targets came directly from listening to the dealers who use Anvil Pro Quote every day.

"The trouble that a sales manager has is communicating expectations to their sales team and actually keeping track of how closely they're hitting those targets," said Jeff Gutierrez, Product Manager at Tractor Zoom. "Dealerships already have their own spreadsheets of what their targets are. This isn't a brand new idea — they just weren't doing it inside Anvil Pro yet."

As more dealers adopted Anvil Pro Quote, the team consistently heard that margin visibility at the point of sale was a priority. Competitors offer similar solutions, which confirmed the market expected this capability.

Rather than building a heavy-handed approval system, the team focused on communication. Margin Targets doesn't block a rep from moving forward with a below-target deal;  it simply makes the expectation visible at the moment it matters most.

"There should be no excuses to not know what the expectation was," Gutierrez said.

Who can use it?

Margin Targets is available to all non-Deere dealers who use Anvil Pro Quote, across every OEM and equipment type.

This feature is especially valuable for dealerships that:

  • Sell a wide variety of equipment with different margin profiles
  • Have multiple salespeople who need consistent pricing guidance
  • Want management visibility into deal profitability without reviewing every quote

Setup is straightforward. Your sales manager provides margin expectations by equipment type, the rules are configured in Salesforce, and targets appear automatically on every matching quote from that point forward.

What's next

Dealers have already expressed interest in notifications and approval workflows. Those aren't part of the initial release, but the underlying data is in place to support them as the feature evolves.

For now, the goal is simple: Every rep knows the target, every manager can see the results, and every deal starts with clear expectations.
